ᓰᐱᐦᑭᓯᐤ Still I Rise is a free, two-part virtual event focused around positive mental health and well-being for all Grade 6-12 youth in Alberta and beyond and serves as an excellent opportunity to support Indigenous and non-Indigenous students alike in walking together towards reconciliation. Presentations focused on the areas of Elders, Arts and Culture, Physical Activity and Land-based Learning, with positive mental health and well-being emphasized across all content. Still I Rise celebrates Indigenous stories, fosters resilience for Indigenous youth and encourages reconciliation for all in attendance. Part 1 Still I Rise: Empower & Inspire! featured speakers from Treaties 6, 7 and 8. Attendees met members of the Ever Active Schools team. The Ever Active Schools organization creates and supports healthy school communities. The organization engages and supports schools through a Comprehensive School Health framework, which addresses health and education goals to improve the social outcomes of children and youth in Alberta. The day capped off with a keynote address from Dallas Soonias, former professional volleyball player and head coach of the SAIT Trojans. In his session, Dallas spoke to success: what it is and how it means different things for different people in different circumstances. Part 2 Still I Rise: Celebrate and Share! is scheduled for May 26, 2022.
