Celebrating Diversity and Inclusivity

Posted on:

In June, GYPSD honors National Indigenous History Month and recognizes st National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21 . Contact your local school to view the schedule of events in your community.

Our schools host a number of events, activities, and post information throughout the year to acknowledge and learn about the rich histories, cultures, and ways of life of Indigenous Peoples; examples include Red Dress Day at Jasper Jr./Sr. High School, a display at Pine Grove in Edson on Indigenous artists, athletes, authors, musicians and chiefs, and at Grande Cache Community High School, a group of students in the Cree Club designed and created their own ribbon hoodies and shirts with different symbolism and messages embedded in their designs. Several community partners and members helped make their projects.

The Division also hosts an Annual Indigenous Education Event which was held on April 14 and 15, 2025, in Jasper this year. Each spring, educators, instructional leaders, Board of Trustees members, and community partners come together to engage in a rich exchange of knowledge, wisdom, and traditions. Esteemed guest presenters share stories and expertise, offering insights into Indigenous languages, land-based learning, artistry, plant wisdom, movement, and more.

June is also Pride Month, a time to celebrate and support the 2SLGBTQI+ community. Through these celebrations, we foster a culture of understanding, respect, and inclusivity for everyone in our community.
