CVS Students Visit the Legislature
Posted on:
Grade 6 students from Crescent Valley School in Hinton received some hands-on experience in what it means to be a government official with their recent visit to the Alberta Legislature in May. The visit provided the students with a first-hand look at how government works, and is designed to support the social studies curriculum by discussing the function of provincial government and the importance of active citizenship.
The students were met by their local MLA, and Minister of Infrastructure, The Honourable Martin Long, who proudly toured them through his offices, and provided gifts for each student (a pin and a pencil). After a comprehensive tour of the rest of the Legislature, they attended part of a session of the Legislative Assembly, in which Crescent Valley and its students were acknowledged to the excitement of the students, and they were able to experience an exchange between the members of the opposition and The Honourable, Danielle Smith, Premier of Alberta.
Students ended their busy day by participating in a mock Legislative Assembly where the students acted in different legislative roles, debated new legislation, and then voted it into law.
