GNS - GTHS Samples a New Cuisine
Posted on:
Grand Trunk High School (GTHS) and the Evansburg Public Library partnered together earlier this year to host a new culinary event for GTHS students where students got to taste test a sample of books to interest their palate!
Students went through different rounds, or “courses” where they spent a limited amount of time with books of five different genres. They had time to check out the cover, and then sample a summary of the novel including the first few pages/chapters to see if it was to their taste.
Students then recorded their observations and thoughts on their “menu” and noted if they were interested in reading the book. Along with the book tasting, students also were given some actual tasty treats to snack on. The students then ranked their top three books and had the opportunity to request the library to order in books for them. At the end of the event, students chose from some parting gifts and handed in their menus. Junior high students all attended this literacy event, while high school students signed up for the chance to participate.
Book tastings are a fantastic way to engage students in reading, exposing them to a wide variety of genres, and allowing them to experience books they might not otherwise choose.
