GNS: Indigenous Excellence

A child's sense of belonging to their community is critical to a positive Indigenous identity. It is enriched by sharing cultural values, social norms, support and guidance, celebrations, ceremonies, language, and gatherings (Ullrich, 2019).

GYPSD ensures that Indigenous perspectives are appropriately included in all programs of study offered in our schools. Indigenous Pathways Lead Teachers are in each school to assist all staff in learning more about the history and the legacy of Residential Schools, the Treaties, and the history of Indigenous peoples in order to better meet the needs of Indigenous and Métis students.

Indigenous Pathways Lead Teacher Raeanne Miller at Crescent Valley School in Hinton is committed to connecting with their Indigenous students and community. Along with providing many resources and supports, she has designed beautiful bulletin board displays focusing on Indigenous identity. Indigenous Pathways Lead Teachers also annually nominate a number of deserving students for the Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Student Awards sponsored by the Alberta School Boards Association. These awards are intended to recognize First Nations, Métis and Inuit students who model strength and commitment in
pursuing their personal education path and embrace their gifts, strengths and potential while celebrating the ways of their people.
