GNS: Westhaven's Literacy Project

Posted on:

École Westhaven School in Edson holds fun literacy-themed events and activities to promote literacy throughout the year. Staff is creative with the various school-wide initiatives that engage students in the love of reading such as Author of the Month, Story of the Week, and Exploring Genres. Family Literacy Day takes place every January 27th to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. In advance of Family Literacy Day, Westhaven staff have created a Guess the Book Walk. Students travel around the school with their classroom cohort and hunt to locate seven wall displays featuring photos and quotes from children’s books. They then try to match the quotes and photos with the correct book. Guess the Book Walk exposes students to books in both English and French that they may not know. The game also provides students with inspiration for a costume to wear on Family Literacy Day which has also been scheduled for students and staff to Dress Like a Book Character!
