GNS: Young Entrepreneurs at Work

Posted on:

If you have ever dreamed of owning your own business, with hard work, solid experience, analytical skills, and a well-designed business plan, you can succeed. École Westhaven Elementary School's Grade 1/2 Montessori class decided that they wanted to put together their own action plan for a coffee shop!

They expressed interest in hosting a coffee shop as part of their service practical learning this term. The students created a list of things they would need to learn in order to be successful which were followed up with presentations and practical learning opportunities on the selected topics. These bright young entrepreneurs learned how to:- make coffee, tea and hot chocolate on their own- take an order for a drink- fill out an order form- recognize the value of Canadian Coins- add sums and make change Students also practiced their communication skills (verbal and written) throughout the process as they politely engaged with a number of adults and students in the building.

This multidisciplinary project helped students to deepen their understanding of numeracy, literacy, and practical life curriculums. The students did a wonderful job and thoroughly enjoyed providing yummy treats to the adults in the building.

École Westhaven is the only public school in rural Alberta that offers a Montessori program. It is a student-centered approach that encourages creativity and curiosity and leads children to ask questions, explore, investigate and think for themselves as they acquire skills. The school currently offers a K to Grade 2 program with limited openings so contact the school to learn more about this engaging and exceptional learning option for your young learner in Edson!
