JJSHS Students Attend Climate and Energy Summit

Posted on:

Jasper Junior Senior High School (JJSHS) was proud to have four Grade 10 and 11 students, accompanied by teachers, Andre Morson and Christina Gerhardt, participate in the Generate 2025 Climate and Energy Youth Leadership Summit in Calgary from March 13 to 16, 2025. The Summit, organized by Inside Education, provided an immersive learning experience focused on crucial topics related to energy and climate, and this was their 14 year in hosting this event. The students were nominated by teachers and selected based on their interest in expanding the school leadership goals.

During the event, JJSHS students had the valuable opportunity to visit several key sites, including SAIT, Bow Valley College, the GoElectric Vehicle Corporation, and the Bonnybrook Wastewater Treatment Plant. They also engaged in hands-on workshops led by various leaders in the field and were inspired by a keynote address from Amazing Race Canada winners, Anthony Johnson & Dr. James Makokis. The summit program delved into local Alberta energy and climate issues, ensuring students gained a comprehensive and balanced perspective on these important topics.

Inspired by this extensive learning experience, the students will now focus on developing and implementing an environmental action project within  their school. Students are establishing a composting system for the foods lab where they plan on tracking  diverted waste and use it to simulate future sustainability projects in the future.  This initiative aims to foster continued growth and engagement in environmental stewardship within our school community.
