Over the last few weeks, Grade 8 students at École Pine Grove Middle School have been working on creating models of cells. In the Grade 8 Science Unit on Cells, students are introduced to what cells are. Cells are the smallest unit of life, and each cell is a system nested within a system. In this unit, students develop their knowledge of organisms by focusing on the structure and function of cells in plants and animals. Students also explore the impact that our understanding of cells and cell processes has on both human health and the environment. Students used a wide variety of materials and techniques to bring the illustrations in their textbook to life. Some students used computer graphics, others used modelling clay and craft material and some baked and decorated cell cakes. Staff have found it exciting to watch students walk through the door in the morning with their creations!
