Wildwood Students Involved with Their Community
Posted on:
Wildwood students have been very busy this year with a number of engaging and fun learning activities with community members.
Ms. Sammie Weninger introduced the Classroom Agriculture Program (CAP) to her 20 Grade 3 and 4 students. The Program has been running for over 40 years and was created to enhance students’ understanding of agriculture and where their food comes from. Patricia O’Neil is the Agricultural Services Coordinator for Yellowhead County and also volunteers with CAP. Students did a few hands-on demos that showed the importance of the soil, the different crops grown in Alberta, and then sorted grocery items based on the crop they come from. Students finished the day by planting sunflower seeds that they were excited to take home. The activity aligns with the Science Program of Studies for both Grade 3 - Human Activities that Change the Land and Importance of Soil, and Grade 4 - Natural Resources and Parts of the Earth.
Wildwood has also proudly hosted a grandparents’ program for over 25 years at the school - linking community members, as well as students’ grandparents, to volunteer with their grade 4 students to form cross-generational relationships. Program activities run from October to March and include
- floor curling
- seasonal crafts
- card games
- family history and area history examination
- reusing items for outdoor decorations, and
- making and serving snacks for others including a May Spring Tea for community members, and year-end celebration.
