GYPSD Hosts Bus Roadeo for Division Drivers

Posted on:

It was an exciting event showcasing the skills and expertise that GYPSD school bus drivers demonstrate every day while keeping students safe on their way from home to school.

The division’s first annual Bus Roadeo was held on May 27 at the central office grounds and was proudly hosted by the Transportation Department. Participating GYPSD drivers drove their way around eight different tests/ obstacles that were judged by transportation staff, central office staff and yes, even other drivers, who brought out their measuring sticks and clipboards to judge drivers

  • On their approach and stop at railroad crossings
  • Driving through narrowing pylons or diminishing clearance
  • Making a right turn to stay on a path
  • Keeping a straight line without hitting a line of tennis balls
  • Backing up as close as possible to a marker without going over
  • Stopping within a specific measurement
  • Weaving their bus around pylons in an offset alley, and
  • Picking up a student.

Other division drivers also cheered on their peers and the student actor for the event was one of the drivers’ children, so it truly was a family affair! The day included a BBQ lunch and prizes for the top three: Amanda Bangma, Joyce Kiland, and Jen Rauch, who then also qualified to represent GYPSD at the Provincial Roadeo in Nisku on June 7. Only Amanda and Jen were able to go along with Director Christine Van Neck who was a judge for the provincial event. Ms. Van Neck was proud of her drivers as it was their first time at provincials and hopes to send more drivers again next year.
