GNS: PGMS Students Practice the Power of Democracy

Posted on:

Grade 6 students in Mr. Bohn's class at École Pine Grove Middle School (PGMS) in Edson recently participated in a Mock Legislative Assembly Session as part of their Social Studies curriculum,  exploring how democratic principles are reflected in local and provincial governments. What better way to learn than by some hands-on learning?

Students were tasked with tabling a Bill to change the number of school days in the year, from five days a week, to four days a week. Their Bill passed the first, second and third reading and gained Royal assent. The Speaker of the House did a tremendous job of ensuring that the opposition and the party in charge each got to speak and that the MLAs were respectful and were debating within the scope of the Bill. Great job Grade 6!
